Spice Global plans university in UP, to spend Rs.400 crore
The B.K. Modi-led Spice Global group is entering the higher education business with plans to spend an initial Rs.400 crore to open a university in Uttar Pradesh.
The proposed 100-acre varsity in Rampur, about a 4-hour drive from New Delhi, will offer graduate and postgraduate degrees and have collaborations with leading institutions in Singapore and Thailand, Modi said in a telephone interview. It plans to start partial operations by the next academic session and will be fully ready by 2015, according to Modi. It will run classes on campus and offer distance learning to students both in India and abroad, he said.
“Initially we are committing nearly Rs.400 crore; the entire expenditure will be Rs.1,000 crore over a five-year period,” Modi said, adding that global financial collaboration was possible after the passage of the Foreign Educational Institution (Regulation of Entry and Operation) Bill, 2010.
The Bill, when it becomes law, will provide a legal framework for foreign institutions to open independent campuses in India and offer degrees. It will also facilitate joint degree programmes, more twinning pacts and spur student and faculty exchanges between foreign and Indian universities.
Private varsities have mushroomed in India to tap demand for higher education that government institutions haven’t been able to meet. The Azim Premji Foundation, named after the chairman of Wipro Ltd, is setting up a varsity in Karnataka while HCL Technologies Ltd founder Shiv Nadar has announced plans to open one in Noida. “Involvement of leading private firms in the higher education space is a good move as a lot more students can get quality education,” said Bharat Gulia, senior manager, education, at consulting firm Ernst and Young.
The $2 billion (Rs.9,340 crore) Spice Group manufactures mobile handsets, has a business process outsourcing unit and runs cinemas. The planned varsity will be benchmarked with the National University of Singapore and Thailand’s Chulalongkorn University, Modi says.
“We will set up more institutions in the higher education sector but will talk about it in February 2011 when a part of the varsity will be ready for operation,”he said.

What is walter payton college prep admission scoring guide?
I want to get into this prestigious college preparatory high school, but I couldn’t find the scoring guide they have for admission. I know it has a total of 1,000 points.

It is true that Walter Payton is a very prestigious school. It is number 2 in the state. On average Walter Payton college prep accepts 230 students. The average score accepted at payton college prep is a 956. Of course depending on your race and gender the score you need too score may be higher or lower. If you are a 7th grader going to 8th grade in the year 09-10 you can apply for payton and take the entrance exam. but be warned every year there are about 12,000 people who apply to these selective enrollment there are only about 2,500 spots at these selective enrollment schools.
To get into the top ones you’ll need about a 90 percent or above on your nationally ranked exam. You should also have almost straight A’s, 3 or less absences, and a 90 percent or more on your entrance exam. Remember you will be competing for spots with kids who scored a 960 or above. Before applying you should really check the selective enrollment website to see if you could realistically get into walter payton. This is not to discourage you but many excellent students are rejected when applying for these schools. I know the process because I am going to northside college prep this coming fall.
